Pronunciation is a very relevant topic in my classes. Compared to English, I've noted that Japanese pronunciation is relatively simple. The average Japanese sentence only uses around 5 simple vowel sounds that sometimes blend with "y" to make a slightly similar sound. This makes it a bit difficult for them to utilize vowel sounds beyond that. I think the toughest issue is that of the "Katakana English," the Japanese pronunciation of foreign loan words. When students have spent years pronouncing "apple" as "appuru," it can be very difficult to coax them out of that and work towards proper pronunciation. I think the methods of teaching phonetics presented in this lesson are very useful to apply in some of my later lessons.
