The three main aspects of teaching English as a foreign language are vocabulary, grammar, and language function. All three are required to properly absorb a foreign language, and the acquisition of each form have to be balanced. If a student is overwhelmed with vocabulary, especially vocabulary that isn't entirely relevant to them, they'll be less likely to understand how to use the vocabulary in basic sentences, which in turn will detract from their understanding of how to properly relay the language in real life situations. Once a solid grasp of the three foundations are gained, the students will be more receptive to language acquisition.
