In this unit, I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of using a coursebook, how a teacher should use a coursebook, and how to analyze a coursebook. As a previous language learner, I loved coursebooks. I believed them to be a valuable resource and I wish I used coursebooks more especially after I learned how to analyze them and of all the different sections it provides. I thought the coursebook provided structure and allowed me to prepare sufficiently for the class. Furthermore, all the information is in one place rather than many loose materials, which could be lost or misplaced easily. As a student, I saw more advantages than disadvantages in having a coursebook. However, I have never used on as a teacher. I now know why the coursebook can be thought of as a hindrance rather than a tool. I hope to use one in the future and be able to as a resource and not as my lesson. I hope through experience, I’ll be able to use a coursebook creatively and appropriately to match the needs of my students.
