This unit depicted two different approaches to teaching ESL. The first lesson showed how ESA, if not done with the proper techniques, can be ineffective in teaching and learning. In the first lesson, the teacher jumped right into the lesson without an ice-breaker or even explaining the topic of the lesson for the day. He spoke much too fast and was not clear about the subject matter. The students were confused and intimidated and were not able to answer questions correctly. The teacher admonished the students throughout the course of the class which is strongly advised against by this program. At times, he seemed flustered and annoyed with the students, particularly when the late students arrived. Although he had materials and pictures, he did not properly use the ESA technique, therefore the students were unable to respond to what he asked them to do. The second lesson showed how ESA is used properly. Immediately, the teacher introduced himself and wrote his name on the board, so the students could remember. He then asked each of their names and did very well at remembering them. He also slowly and clearly explained what the topic of the lesson plan would be before starting the engage phase. Also, in the second lesson, he periodically assessed the students understanding of the concepts before moving to the next phase. After allowing the students to participate in group work (a great way to get students to talk to one another and practice speaking English), he assessed their knowledge once more. The second lesson had a more positive outcome than the first.
