This unit discussed the various forms of past tense. Many of the rules are like the rules for present tense pertaining to the affirmative, negative and question forms. I learned that all continuous forms should have some form of the verb “to be” and a verb ending in “ing.” If the “to be” verb is in the present (is/are/am) then the action(s) will be in the present continuous. If the “to be” verb is in the past (were/was/been) then the action(s) will be in the past continuous. I learned that all perfect forms are structured the same, and will have a form of the verb “to have” and the past participle of a verb. If these forms are in the present, it is present perfect, if they are in the past, it is past perfect. Similarly, all perfect continuous forms are structured the same with a form of the verb “to have”, and “been” and a verb ending in “ing.” Again, if the forms are in the past, then it is past perfect continuous, and if they are in the present, it is present perfect continuous. Past perfect continuous is not used very often in the English language except to do one thing, and that is to describe longer actions in the past that had been going on continuously up until the past moment we are talking about. It doesn’t matter if the action has continued beyond the point in time we are talking about.
