In the fourth unit of our ITTT Training Course, we learned about the present tenses and the different forms that they take which include Present Simple, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, and Present Perfect Continuous. The first form that present tenses can take is the Present Simple form which is used to describe habitual actions, permanent facts and information, commentaries, directions and manuals, newspaper story headlines, current event stories, and historical sequence of events. The second form that present tenses can take is the Present Continuous form which is used to discuss an action that is in progress at the time of the speaking, to talk about an action that is not in progress at the time of speaking, to put emphasis on frequently occurring actions, to provide the background details about a current news story, and to refer to a certain regular action that takes place around a certain point of time. The third form that present tenses can take is the Present Perfect form which is used to talk about finished actions that took place at an indefinite time, when we are talking about formerly completed actions that took place during an unfinished period of speaking, when we desire to speak about a topic that began in the past and that is still true and valid at the time of speaking, and when we want to describe past actions that have present day results and consequences. The final form that present tenses can take is the Present Perfect Continuous form which is used to communicate about incomplete and ongoing activities and to describe recently finished activities that have presents results and outcomes.
