I have learnt that the sentence form for conditionals changes depending on the time context of the condition and consequence - if the consequence holds true whenever the condition occurs: the form will be "if/when + present tense, present tense"; if the consequence is like to happen in the future if the condition is satisfied: "if + present tense, will"; if the consequence is a hypothetical one: "if + past simple, would/could/might"; if it is a hypothetical past consequence due to a hypothetical past action: "if + past perfect, would/could/might + past participle". For reported speech, there is a backshift in time, physical position, so present tenses become past tenses, and words like "yesterday" become "the day before", etc. Activate activities for conditionals may include discussion on hypothetical situations and chain conditionals, and activities for reported speech may include three-group games in which one student acts as a middleman to liaise between two parties.
