In this unit, I was able to watch two videos of the same lesson with one being more effective than the other. At first, I thought the first video was supposed to be the effective lesson and was extremely confused while watching it. I felt confused because there were many mistakes and the overall atmosphere was uncomfortable. Student participation was minimal and even I was confused as to the instructions of the final activity in the lesson. I knew then that the first lesson plan was the ineffective lesson plan especially when he just walked out at the end seeming to be fed up and annoyed. The teacher had a very bad attitude the entire lesson and he even texted, which was very unprofessional.
It was the complete opposite in the second video. The teacher was friendly and open and was able to engage the students in the lesson appropriately. What I thought made his lesson truly effective was when he learned all the student’s names and was able to engage with the students by calling on their names directly. He was also organized with his materials and prepared to start the lesson. His explanations were thorough and easy to understand which allowed for more student participation because they were able to follow the lesson flow. The overall atmosphere of the second video was comfortable and promoted student’s participation, which was proven by the student’s talking and answering questions and light attitudes towards one another and the teacher.
Watching both demonstrations of the same lesson plan was very helpful in seeing how the theory is applied in a real classroom setting. When I am able to observe a classroom with an effective teacher I feel I am able to learn the most since I am a visual learner. Observing live demonstrations allow me to understand the concepts and how each part cohesively form one entire lesson plan.
