In this unit, we look at the complex parts of pronunciation and phonology in the English language. Phonology deals with two main areas. To begin with, intonation is concerned with the total sound and tone of the statement. It is indicated by the fall or rise tone and can be taught by uttering nonsense words, making gestures or even singing. Second, the stress focuses on the individual words and syllables and it can be understood through contrastive stress, choral work or simply by showing it on the board. The phonemic sounds represent a major part of phonology and it is practiced through articulation. There are different ways to teach pronunciation, for instance, by peer dictation, by over-emphasising, by visuals and even tongue twisters. Through this unit, I have come to understand the different segments that form the phonemic symbols and the different methods of teaching pronunciation which goes hand in hand with phonology.
