My students have difficulty distinguishing among the past tenses, so problems in usage occur. They also find difficulty using irregular past verbs. Retelling events seems to be one of the best ways to practice using the past tenses. The students can make stories with pictures or short videos as prompts. Other fun activities I can think of are interviews (Have you ever?), and games like Two Truths One Lie.
