In this unit, I learned about the purpose of lesson plans, the important functions it serves, and the principles one need to consider when planning a lesson. The purpose of lesson plans is to act as a guide for the teacher while still accommodating for flexibility should the teacher need to improvise. However, since improvising can be challenging, lesson plans are highly valuable to an inexperienced teacher who are not comfortable with improvising. Furthermore, if one gets off track it will serve its purpose as a guide to get back on track. Another function that a lesson plan serves is as a record of what has been taught and what material has been used, which is obviously important but had not occurred to me until I read that. This unit also provides us with the different features of what a lesson plan should include which is then presented to us in an example lesson plan.
The only practice I have with making lesson plans was for my classes and the short tutoring session I had. From those experiences, what I always found to be one of the most difficult tasks was timing. I was usually never on the mark, always had too little or too much time. I hope that along with experience I will be able to overcome my difficulties with timing.
