What happens when students can't distinguish l from r, or s from sh, or cat from cut. It's a real issue at the school that I currently work at. Students breeze through phonics very quickly, and activities are very much tailored to fit Japanese phonics rather than places/manner of articulation, stress, intonation and rhythm. It is true that English spelling makes pronunciation quite difficult, especially for speakers who use very different sounds. In my case, Japanese students have trouble distinguishing the sounds I mentioned earlier. However, little to no time is dedicated toward helping them overcome this. Instead, lessons are grammar and vocabulary based. I would like to try to incorporate phonetics into lessons, even if it means asking for 5 minutes at the beginning/end of all classes to work on it with students. This unit offered useful strategies like: nonsense words, gestures, humming/singing, the board, contrastive stress. It also provided a diagram of the speech organ. I want to explore how to effectively teach and reinforce phonology in the classroom, especially as I don't speak the native language of the students. They are beginners to English, so it's especially hard to provide detailed explanations. However, as a teacher I should definitely be fluent in the phonetic library and manners/places of articulation. This is something I will continue to work on every day.
