This unit introduces the receptive skills of language: reading and listening. Different ways of how we listen and read are mentioned such as skimming, scanning, prediction, deduction based on context. I learnt that the selection of the material we teach as well as the motivation for learning the material is crucial component when using these skills effectively. As a teacher we need to tailor our topic to the interests of the students and be considerate to the levels of their language ability when choosing the teaching method. For example, if they are going to read or listen to something, teachers should pre-teach difficult vocabulary that are important in their understanding of the text.
