There are five kinds of conditional sentences, based on their syntactical form: the zero conditional (if/when + present tense, present tense), the first conditional (if + present tense, will + base form of verb), the second conditional (if + past simple, would/could/might + base form of verb), the third conditional (if + past perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle), and the mixed conditional sentence (if + past perfect, would + base form). The various syntactical patterns are employed to express different relative times of the condition and the consequence and different degrees of certainty or uncertainty of the condition and the consequence. Speech that is indirectly reported follows rules for the change of the tense of the verb and pronoun of the original (direct) speech, and care and practice are needed in order to master the proper use of indirect speech; there are many mistakes students can make, and these must be patiently corrected as students learn.
