There are four principal skills, the receptive skills of listening and reading, and the productive skills of speaking and writing. The two receptive skills, listening and reading, can be effectively taught in an Engage-Study-Activate lesson, with a motivating discussion of a topic of interest to the students, a close listening or reading of a text about this topic for study, and an activating activity in which students write and read out their own text on a similar topic.
