The sections of this unit regarding large classes and native language use in the classroom were really helpful for me. I teach at seven different public schools, and the large classes seem to have the worst English skills. As an ALT, there's not much that I can do to help; but whenever I get a chance, I'll try to implement more pair and group work activities. One thing I'm really concerned about, however, is giving feedback and correcting pronunciation issues in large groups. I feel like this is something that the teachers at the larger schools don't address, and I'm not sure how I can help.
The native language section was helpful, but I would like more information on the right amount of native language use with young learners. Especially when explaining activities and their rules, I feel like I have to resort to the native language. This is especially the case if there isn't another teacher in the room who cam demonstrate the activity with me, or if they don't understand the rules themselves. I've had many mix-ups with activities because the teachers didn't understand my attempts to explain the activity in Japanese either.
