Unit 12 looked at teaching the productive skills of speaking and writing, used by students to express themselves when learning. There are many similarities in teaching both writing and speaking, such as the focus on fluency/creativity and accuracy of the language. However there are also differences. In teaching writing, punctuation and handwriting are important whereas with speaking, pronunciation and intonation play a crucial role in learning to speak the foreign language. I found the section of the lesson that dealt with teaching productive skills in a standard ESA lesson most useful as it helped me understand at what stage of the lesson the different productive skill elements should be focused on. For example, focusing on fluency should be done during the activity stage of the lesson whereas accuracy should be focused on during the study stage.
