The two productive skills in language are speaking and writing. They have much in common, but there are differences between them. Speaking is typically more informal and may involve the use of contractions and slang, while writing is often more formal and may involve refraining from the use of contractions and slang. Correct communication through speaking requires correct pronunciation as well as correct grammar, but correct communication via writing, by contrast, requires correct spelling of words and right grammatical usage. In both speaking and writing, accuracy is concerned with correct forms indicating correct meanings: grammar, pronunciation (for speaking), and spelling (writing), while fluency is concerned with ready expression of semantic content rather than correct forms. Accuracy can be effectively taught in the Study phase of an Engage-Study-Activate lesson, and fluency can be taught effectively in the Activate phase with activities that are not as controlled by the teacher.
