This unit’s topic was teaching receptive skills. I learned that when reading or listening, we employ a number of specialist skills such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, and deduction from context. I learned the difference between scanning and skimming, and also learned a number of pointers that teachers should follow when teaching receptive skills, such as using ways to create interest in the topics beforehand, and providing tasks that promote understanding, rather than merely check it.
