Unit 1 highlighted the roles of both the teacher and the student while also mentioning the key chAracteristics that each needs to possess in order to have a sucessful learning experience. The teacher must not only have a love for teaching but also a deep interest in the sucess of their students. This can be displayed by how the teacher interacts with his/her students and how they go about organizing their lessons, A patient, entusiastic, knowledgable, and sensitive teacher who has a great rapport with his/her students will create a desirable learning atmosphere for learners. A learner who is willing to listen to the language, desires to learn, is willing to expirement with the language and to ask questions will also add to this postive learning environment. Both teacher and student are responsible for the sucess of language aquisition in the learner. The chapter also highlighted the diffrences between adult and young learners and what barriers and strengths each may bring to the classroom. For example an adult student may be more motivated than a younger student because the adult learner has enrolled himself/herself in the program. Furthermore, this chapter touched on the variety of roles a teacher will play in the classroom from controller to tutor to participant. Finally the unit established the different levels of language learners. Overall this unit successfully outlined why a strong and positive student relationship is necessary for a successful ESL program.
