Intonation is variation in volume and pitch in a sentence, whereas stress is variation in an individual word. Intonation is important in questions, agreeing/disagreeing, confirming statements, and expressing emotions. It usually follows a rise/fall pattern unless the speaker wants the listener to respond/confirm, in which case it becomes a fall/rise pattern. You can teach intonation by utilizing nonsense words, gestures, humming/singing, or the board. You can teach stress with contrastive stress, gestures, choral work, the board, and stress marks. Sounds can be linked together through linking, sound dropping, sound changing, and extra lettering. Places of articulation include velar, palatal, palatal-alveolar, alveolar, dental, labio-dental, bilabial, and glottal. Manners of articulation are plosive, fricative, nasal, lateral, affricate, and approximant.
