Conditionals can be difficult enough for people whose first language is English. I was never taught these rules in school, including university. As a native speaker, I sometimes "just know" what is correct. I can't imagine teaching this concept to non-native speakers without the instruction of this unit. It reminded me of when I was learning the subjunctive forms in a Spanish class. Definitely, the more practice, the more accurate my use of the form became. Sometimes I couldn't explain my reasoning for choosing that form, but it was the right form. Similarly, the more an ESL student can practice and use the conditional forms, the more proficient he or she will become in its daily use. The section on Direct Speech vs. Reported Speech was interesting because we teach that in the primary grades--having 1 student make a statement and then another student has to report "what she said". There are many of the time change words I have not been using correctly so will be glad to instill that knowledge on my students in the coming years.
