In the eleventh unit of our ITTT course titled "Teaching Receptive Skills", we learned about the different reasons for reading and listening, the various methods for reading and listening, and the different problems with listening and reading. The first reason for reading and listening is to listen for a purpose that will help us to reach or achieve a certain goal or plan that we have set out to complete. The second reason for reading and listening is for entertainment in that our minds perceive it to be fun and enjoyable in some way. The next section talked about the different methods that we use for reading and listening which include using predictive skills to predict future events and occurances, using text scanning to read for specific pieces of information, skimming while reading in which we briefly go over the entire text in order to get the gist of what it is talking about, detailed information in which we listen closely to detailed information in order to understand it better, and deduction form context in which we deduce the context of written instructions based on the surrounding factors. The final section talked about common language learning problems and how to deal with them which include teaching the students pre-teaching vocabulary, carefully selecting the course text and lessons, carefully choosing the lesson topic, creating interest through engaging and exciting activities, and providing the students with tasks and projects that are at their level.
