Unit 11 tells us about the receptive skills of reading and listening, and teaches us how to develop these skills in students in a classroom environment. Lesson planning for developing receptive skills require pre-planning, as the teacher needs to not only be aware of the students' existing vocabulary strength, but also of his/her interests. Knowing their interests will help in securing their attention and ensuring participation, and therefore, learning. This unit helps us understand the importance of providing variety in the topics, as well as the need to make the students feel a sense of accomplishment - the exercises should neither be too easy nor too difficult. Capturing the students' imagination and their interest is crucial to foster a strong development of receptive skills like listening and reading.
