This unit discusses how to effectively teach receptive skills (listening and reading). The unit starts by describing why we read and listen, and the skills we use to perform these activities (predictive, scanning, etc.). The unit then describes strategies teachers can use to enhance development of these skills. Teachers can choose topics their students find interesting, pre-teach some vocabulary but not all, and include a variety of activities to stimulate interest and encourage students to practice. The unit ends with a sample lesson plan. In this unit, I feel that I have learned that paying attention to the topic of a reading/listening exercise (in addition to the difficulty of a text) is very important to the success of a lesson.
