When teaching receptive skills it is important that students know that they need not know the meaning of every single word they read or hear in order to gain understanding. If they relax and listen for the general meaning they will have more confidence. Reading is easier than listening because students can re-read something and take time to study a text, whereas when listening they must process language more quickly and will only hear things once in an authentic situation.
