This unit focuses on the receptive skills - reading and listening. We basically read for a purpose and for entertainment. The way we read and listen, is greatly affected by our pre-existing knowledge of our world.
There are a number of skills that we use when reading and listening:- Predictive skills, Scanning, Skimming, Detailed Information and Deduction from Context.
Reading presents fewer problems to foreign English students, since texts are available on demand, versus listening, where they are usually exposed to the words only once. There are ways to help students overcome these problems, such as pre-teaching difficult vocabulary - do not over do it. Only teach the words necessary to understand the text. Learning to understand texts without knowing every word is an important skill that should be encouraged.
Also, selecting authentic and non-authentic texts has their diverse benefits for the students.
The topic should be interesting and variable enough to pique the students' interest, curiosity.
Comprehension tasks are also vital to promote understanding, versus just checking that. Such a task should be realistically achievable.
