In the fourteenth unit of our ITTT course titled "Course Books and Lesson Materials", we learned about the advantages and disadvantages of course books, authentic materials, and created materials. In the first section, we learned about what constitute course books which include student books, school workbooks, cassette tapes, video activities, and English books. We also learned about the advantages and disadvantages of course books which include that they are expected by the students, that they provide a course syllabus, that they are a balanced mix of vocabulary and grammar, as well as the possibility that the students might not like the book, the teachers might to be able to choose the course information, and the course books do not always provide alternatives. In the second section, we learned about the best uses for course books which include not using the book for the whole lesson, exploring ways to match the book to the student's needs, and considering how much time will be needed for each part of the book. The third section talked about the best ways to analyze a course book which include how expensive the book is, how attractive the design is, what skills are necessary to understand the content, how difficult the content is, and whether or not the teacher's guide is helpful.
