When meeting a new class for the first time, whether it is a new or an existing group, among the first things should be of establishing a good rapport between the teacher and the students. Moreover, in the case of a new group the teacher must establish a good rapport not only between him/her and the students but between the students as well.
At the time of the first lesson, a teacher, instead of starting off the lesson with the first pages of the course book, should do a brief but fun warmer activity to 'break the ice', to start establishing the required rapport, create a more relaxed atmosphere and to get the students motivated in using and learning English.
Different level students in the same class do present a tough challenge to the teacher however, there are ways to overcome this problem by splitting the students into a weaker and a stronger group giving each group the same material but the tasks tailored to each groups abilities. Another solution can be to pair stronger students with weaker ones but carefully monitor the pairs to ensure that the stronger student won't dominate the weaker one.
Large classes can also present a problem to the teacher. Fortunately, there are certain techniques to ease the problems that can arise from the involvement of large classes. Techniques such as; the use of worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, appoint group leaders. Make sure of the clarity of the voice and the legibility of the writing. An experienced teacher will use the unique dynamics offered by a large class to his/her advantage.
Foreign students would often resort to the usage of their native tongues during the class however, the teacher's job is to have the students practicing and improving their English. To eliminate the need in students to use their L1s in class, make sure the instructions, explanations and the activities are clear and appropriate to the students' level. Other solutions are, only respond to English and constantly remind the students of the use of English in class.
Sometimes teachers have to deal with reluctant students. To get these students to participate, use pair- work, controlled practices and role- plays.
A common problem among foreign students is the difficulty with listening texts. When playing tape recordings/dialogues, make sure of the quality of the recording, the volume level and to pick topics that interest that particular group.
Another one is the pace of the lesson. Some students pick up languages faster than other ones. Find the pace of the majority of the class. Keep quick finishers preoccupied with extra work on the material.
