This unit covered the different methods and techniques of language study. It goes over in detail the method of ESA (Engage-Study-Activate). The unit covers concepts such as elicitation and the different techniques one can use in the classroom. The unit also covers different lesson examples that follow the ESA format such as the Patchwork lesson and Boomerang lesson. The final point in this unit deals with giving feedback. The unit discusses when and how to correct students mistakes or errors.
This unit gives a lot of good examples or ideas that are practical for the classroom. It also does a good job explaining the ESA and why each stage is important. This has made me rethink how I teach in my own classroom and what is really important at each stage of a lesson. I have also struggled with giving feedback in my classroom and this unit has given me some great pointers in how to effectively give feedback. An example of this is that I have always wondered, when is the best time for language correction? This unit clearly explains and supports why the best time is after the student has completed speaking. Overall, this unit was full of great tips for giving feedback and how to structure a lesson to increase its effectiveness.
