The final grammar unit, this lesson covers modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, and phrasal verbs. Modals include can, could, may, might, etc. They are used to express obligation, probability, permission (or lack thereof), ability, advice, and to add formality. Modals are generally followed by the base form of verbs. The lesson includes an incredibly handy chart listing the various uses. The differences between active and passive voices are then referenced. Essentially, passive voice is when the object of an active verb becomes the subject of a passive verb (e.g., I wrote this overview. - This overview was written by me.). Another useful chart listing the tense changes is provided. Finally, clauses (independent, dependent, and relative) are discussed. Defining relative clauses provide necessary information, while non-defining relative clauses are not necessary in the sentence. Finally, phrasal verbs are tackled: type 1 - intransitive, type 2 - transitive - separable, and type 3 - transitive - inseparable.
Personally, I found this unit the most helpful because it very clearly explains grammar that I consistently teach and discuss with co-workers due to working with South Korean middle school students, as the middle schools generally use this level of grammar for their public-school English tests.
