In unit fourteen we discussed authentic materials and created materials as well as their use as an aid in teaching lessons. Authentic materials are anything you find in real everyday life such as newspapers, songs, or literature. Authentic materials can be geared towards the interests of particular students, are often interesting to students and therefore increase motivation, and students gain confidence in their ability when they master them. Created materials are anything word searches, crosswords, role-play cards, flashcards, picture stories, and gap fill activities. Unlike authentic materials, created materials offer a big advantage in that they can be tailored to the level of the students. Lastly, we discussed the pros and cons of using coursebooks. A coursebook is advantageous in that it is typically expected by students, less time consuming for the teacher to supplement materials versus starting from scratch, it provides a syllabus, it provides security for teachers and students, it's typically balanced between grammar and vocab, it offers continuity and progression, it's tried and tested, and the teacher's book offers many good ideas for teachers. However, a coursebook may carry some disadvantages such as it does not always fit the specific needs of the students, exclusive use of the coursebook can become boring and predictable, it can make teachers lazy and suppress creativity, many are outdated and unattractive to students, and a coursebook dictates what is taught instead of the lessons being student centered. This unit taught that the best use of a coursebook is to omit certain lessons, replace with more suitable material, supplement it with additional interesting material, and adapt the material to the teacher's style and strengths.
