Continual evaluation through different kinds of testing is very important to measure determine student placement, progress and retention of different language skills. There are seven different types of tests: placement, diagnostic, progress, practice, achievement, external and proficiency.
Placement tests allow a teacher to place the student in groups of similar leveled students. Diagnostic tests are designed to measure what a student does and does not know at the beginning of a course. Progress tests track students as they progress through their course. Practice tests are often given to prepare students for external examinations. These external examinations are often administered by test crating institutions and can be proficiency tests which measure a student's mastery of a graded level of English language in one or more of the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Some popular proficiency tests are the TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge Suite and Trinity College ESOL Skills for Life (UK).
