Conditionals are sentences containing 'if', made of two clauses: the 'if' clause and the main clause. The 'if' clause tells us what must happen for the main clause to come or be true. Because of the multiple verb tenses conditionals involve, they are difficult to learn. Learning to properly report speech can be even more difficult, as it requires 'backshifting' verb tenses from present to past. English as a Second Language teachers should use a slow pace and ample patience when teaching these concepts.
