Unit 19 of the ITTT TEFL course discusses the teaching of special groups. Teachers will often teach young children and adult professionals. However, within these groups, students will often be beginners. There are five different types of beginners and, oftentimes, a student will fall into at least two or three of these categorizations. There are absolute beginners, false beginners, adult beginners, young beginners and the beginner without the roman alphabet. Some important methods of teaching children is to use slower and more clearly pronounced speech, lots of repetition and a focus on positive responses. When teaching professionals business English, it is important to complete a "Needs Analysis" which will determine students' needs, requirements, language level and goals. The "Needs Analysis" will often lead to a "Needs Negotiation" which will determine the focus of the lesson and the timetable of the course going forward. Whether you teach children or professionals, it is important to use English throughout as to not allow students to fall back on the teacher's use of the student's L1 language.
