In unit fifteen we discussed evaluating and testing students. We discussed the different kinds of tests and their individual purposes. Placement tests are used before a course to judge at what level a student's ability is so as to put them in an appropriate course. Similar to placement tests, diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of course to judge what students already know so teachers can best prepare lessons to meet the needs of their students. Progress tests are used periodically throughout the course to see what information has been acquired and what has been forgotten. Practice tests generally prepare students for a specific external examination. External exams, such as the TOEFL, are outside the university and are used as a measure of ability by universities, employers, or immigration authorities.
