This unit essentially illustrates the difference between authentic materials (e.g. newspapers, magazines & video), and created materials (e.g. crosswords, word search puzzles & role play cards).
The former is not designed for the EFL students, while the latter is created by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book.
There are advantages when using course books, including provision of a balanced mix of grammar, and continuity or progression for the students. However, there are some drawbacks too; including the fact that the book may not always fit the specific needs and interests, as well as exclusive use of a course book can become very predictable and boring for the students.
From a teacher’s point of view, there are 4 different options when using a course book as learning tool in lesson. They include, omit, replace, supplement and adapt. Teachers will need to largely depend on their lesson plans and objectives, and opt for the best option which they deem suitable for the students’ benefits.
This chapter also provides a discussion as to some of the fundamental factors a teacher need to consider when choosing course book for a particular class. The considerations we need to take note include price (affordability for the students), methodology (if there is a good mix between study and activation), as well as difficulty level (the degree of language complexity).
