This unit covers some of the most capricious parts of English speech - modals and phrasal verbs. It also explains passive tense. Modals are placed before verbs to change their meaning, often used to ask permission, express obligation, or give advice. Modals can be tricky as most have several meanings, some are quite similar to each other, and others are grammatically related (can/could). Phrasal verbs, composed of a verb and 1-2 particles, are another challenge. They are grammatically hard to handle, lacking simple rules about where object nouns or pronouns can be placed. Also, adding or changing even one particle can completely change the verb's meaning. Rather than attempting to teach hard and fast rules for phrasal verbs as a whole, teachers should introduce them a few at a time, showing students how to use the individual verbs, and using them often to familiarize students to them.
