I just experienced that teaching phonology and pronunciation is a challenging assignment.
Phonology of English is the study of the whole sound system of the language. Firstly, it covers the area of intonation which carries the message in a sentence and is fundamental in expressing emotion or feelings. While intonation is considered to be the variation in volume and pitch in a sentence, stress is more about individual words. The stressed word bears the emphasis in the sentence which expresses what we mean to say or imply.
A crucial part in the study of English phonology is understanding and knowing how to use the international phonetic alphabet. The teacher will be equipped with the proper tool to help students understand the proper pronunciation of the word.
Another important area to learn in Unit 13 is articulation which is expressing oneself clearly and effectively. It covers the study of the speech organs, the place and manner of articulation. All of these should be clearly understood to pronounce the word clearly and properly. Lastly, pronunciation drilling may be emphasized if the students find it hard to properly pronounce words that are foreign to them.
