Unit 1 is broken into two major parts: the qualities and roles of teachers and the qualities and levels of learners. The first part of the unit reminds readers that a good teacher has certain personality traits such as kindness, patience, fairness, etc as well as a relationship with the students that is respectful of the learners learning level, culture, and time. Also, the teacher has many roles that they can take on during a lesson such as a model, assessor, model, facilitator, etc.
The second part of the unit focused on the types of learners you may encounter when teaching. The section first discusses what a good learner is such as a person who asks questions, isn't afraid to make mistakes, etc. This section breaks down the different categories of language learners into adult, post-puberty, pre-puberty, and young learners. The major part of this section covered the levels of learning such as beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced levels. Each of these levels have distinguishing features that can be observed in learners.
For me, the section on learners was the most poignant. After many years teaching, I had forgotten that learners bring with them certain things like experience both in life and language, motivation, and nervousness. The different levels of learners,also, reminded me that all learners are at their own level and what expectations I should have based on that level. This unit was a good reminder to pay attention to your role as the teacher but more importantly to make sure that you are aware of your audience when teaching.
