Section 12 of the ITTT TEFL course discusses the intricacies of teaching the productive skills: speaking and writing. Speaking is usually more focused on than writing and sometimes writing is relegated to homework assignments. These assignments are often not completed and therefore writing is sometimes an undeveloped skill. However, writing ones own poetry or creative writing piece can give the student great pride. When teaching speaking, teachers must focus on the equally important accuracy of speech and fluency of speech. Accuracy measures correct usage of words and language patterns. Fluency, however, is the student's ability to speak smoothly while getting one's ideas across without particular regard to absolute accuracy. Accuracy exercises are usually more teacher controlled and corrected immediately, while fluency exercises are usually more student centered and less focused on absolute correct speech. Four factors to keep in mind when teaching writing are handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation and creative writing.
