Unit eleven was about teaching through receptive skills. I learned that the receptive skills are reading and listening and that they are equally important and can be used for a purpose or for entertainment. When we read or listen we employ one or more skills to gather information. The skills we use are predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for a general understanding, concentrated reading for detail, and deduction from context. In this unit we also discussed potential pitfalls for students and ways to help combat those. We discussed pre-teaching vocabulary as one effective method and careful selection of text topic or task as another method. The unit ended by highlighting that the basic keys to successful receptive skill lessons are choosing material that motivates or interests the students, build interest before reading or listening, pre-teach complex vocabulary or structures, vary the type of material used, use the material to practice different skills, use realistic cmprehension tasks that aid understanding, and incorporate appropriate activate phases that transition smoothly from the text.
