Unit 13 of the 120-hour course discusses how useful the International Phonetic Alphabet can be in helping students produce the correct sounds in English words. It is often hard to determine how a word should sound by looking at its traditional spelling. The IPA takes each sound in the English language and represents it with a symbol, known as a phoneme. The symbols can assist people in learning how to speak English properly, regardless of what variation of English it is. All in all, the IPA serves to improve pronunciation. The unit also addresses the importance of stress and intonation when speaking English. There are three types of intonation: rise-fall, fall-rise, and level (or flat).
