Unit 5 was a unit on class management – it talked about several topics, including building rapport, classroom seating arrangements, types of individual or group work, student and teacher talking time, and others. I found the section on seating arrangements and student groupings particularly helpful, since I learned a lot. It was helpful to learn the explicit pros and cons of different student groupings, since I use a variety in my classroom. Reading the pros and cons helps me match individual, pair, and group work to different types of activities, and which would work best. I also learned a lot about the balance between teacher and student talking time—I always try to maximize student talking time, but this unit explained that TTT is also especially important, particularly for building rapport and giving instructions. Finally, I learned more about giving attention to students and how to provide individual attention in appropriate times and ways—I found this especially helpful because individual attention is difficult for large classes. However, the unit went over how it is still possible as long as individual attention is carried out appropriately, such as having pair work and focusing on key pairs.
