This unit covered the roles and goals of both teachers and learners. It outlined most, if not all, of the necessary qualities for both positions, along with some obstacles and things to avoid.
Both parties must be willing and enthusiastic about the class and its subject matter in order to foster a good learning environment, otherwise classes will become boring and not facilitate much learning. Being an ESL teacher in four high schools in Japan, I have some first hand experience regarding this.
If a teacher is not motivated and does not care for students, they will be able to sense that and not have much interest in the class or respect for the teacher. Things would become boring and monotonous. Everyone in class would just be going through the motions so to speak.
The teacher should be enthusiastic, relatable, and easy to understand with a true passion for helping his/her students progress. This should help inspire motivation in students or augment existing interest. I would say this means that the most important factor for a teacher to bring to class is inspiration and the same for a student is motivation.
To be more specific, the unit detailed how teachers should be patient,inspiring, entertaining, be able to engage all students equally (not show favoritism), know their students, build a good rapport with them, and overall care more about the students learning than their own teaching. It also covered the main roles that teachers should play in the classroom, which include those of the leader, the organizer, the prompter, the participant, the model, the observer,
