I believe that diagnostic testing is particularly important when teaching second language learners. It helps us to get a better understanding of where they are already at with their learning and that in turn helps us to better plan lessons that are appropriate to their level. It is also important for the learner themselves, to get an understanding of where they are at, so that they can set personal goals, and track their own process. This creates a sense of accomplishment. Also, as a reminder of how important the job of an English Language teacher is, the external tests that some of our students will take, could have life changing implications for them if they are successful.
