After watching the actual lesson demonstration videos, I have understood how a teacher’s attitude and lesson preparation could affect the overall success of the lesson, the students` motivation and participation in the class. In the first video, the teacher was rude, impatient and mostly angry. The teacher didn’t care about introducing himself or getting to know the students. If I was one of the students, I would feel uncomfortable and would be hesitant to communicate in the class. The teacher seemed unprepared and didn’t know what he was doing. He started the lesson by asking vague questions and using words that were difficult for the students to comprehend. When he couldn’t get a good response from the students, he continued asking them more questions and acted impatient. The class atmosphere was not relaxing enough for the students to actively get involved in the activities. The class was a catastrophe. The teacher didn`t introduce the objectives of the lesson. He didn`t give clear instructions or explanations of the activities so the students were confused with what they had to do. When the students made mistakes, he corrected them immediately. He should have taken note of those and corrected them during the study stage or later. When some students came in late, he was complaining, and it disrupted the flow of the lesson. When the students were answering a worksheet, the teacher was not monitoring the students. He was looking on his phone or looking outside. He didn’t set clear timing for each activity. He acted as if he was in a rush to finish the class. It felt like he humiliated the students and abruptly just ended the class. It was the worst class I think. The second video showed a better and more effective teaching strategy. The teacher established a good rapport by introducing himself to the students. He then asked the students their names and initiated conversations with the students. He showed a positive attitude. He was smiling and laughing with the students. Thus, the students showed interest and were enthusiastically interacting and participating in the class. He made use of the board to introduce what the lesson was all about, so the students were clearly aware of what they were learning. He used simple language and spoke clearly and loud enough for the students to understand him. He gave clear and specific instructions and explanations of the activities. He was encouraging them and giving feedback to their performance. He didn’t correct the students` mistakes right away but later made the students correct themselves. He checked pronunciation of the students individually rather than just the whole class repeating his words. He didn’t let the late student distract the flow of the lesson. He was monitoring the students and making sure they understood his instructions. The class was lively, and the students had more opportunities to practice what they had learned in a communicative way. Before he ended his lesson, he wrapped up the important vocabulary and grammar points. This class was handled more professionally with an organized lesson structure. I learned a lot from his teaching style. After watching these videos, I have a better grasp or view on how to teach effectively, especially using the Engage Study Activate style of teaching.
