This second unit covers the parts of speech in English. The parts of speech discussed were nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. Each section covers how that specific part of speech works within the English language. For example, articles are broken into indefinite and definite articles. Indefinite articles refer to any member of a group whereas the definite article refers to a specific member in a group.
In this unit, I learned that there can be rules for writing but they can be broken by spoken rules. For example, if we follow written rules for indefinite articles we should say "an European castle" but instead we say "a European castle" because the way we say "Europe" makes it sound as if the word starts with a consonant. I was never aware of this rule. I was also unaware that nouns were categorized as countable and uncountable. These little lessons on the English language have showed the complexities of the language and taught me some new things about the parts of speech.
