As I am in the process of learning Japanese, I know all too well the statement of how learners might to learn about grammar more so than native speakers and can usually be better at it. Native speakers can sometimes get by with just thinking if something sounds right and usually be right. That isn't a luxury no=native speakers have until they are advanced at the language. One of my friends whose English is a second language is very versed in grammar.
It was also interesting learning and brushing up on various parts of grammar like gerunds and the difference of the/an explained to me. Though there are rules for a lot of the stuff here there are a lot of exceptions so I can see how it can be difficult on learners.
