Milano, Texas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The unit shares with the new teachers the usage and things to pay attention when teaching students 4 types of present tenses, namely, present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous.
In particular, this also includes 4 types of observations. They are 1) forms (e.g. positive, negative and question examples), 2) usages (e.g. under what circumstances tense or grammar point is used etc), 3) typical student errors (especially those predictable ones) and 4) stage teaching ideas.
The learning materials clearly outlines to us the specific usages and most importantly, the differences in terms of the meaning, rules, rationales and timelines across these 4 present tenses.
This summary is highly beneficial to my teaching, especially the typical student errors/mistakes they would usually make. The mistake examples can be “I have seen him yesterday” & “I have been knowing him for 3 years” etc. I will record them and share these examples to help my students avoid making these mistakes.
The other thing that I find quite useful is that we need to be mindful when we are using non-progressive verbs in present continuous tense. Basically, we would not use present continuous tense for some non-action verbs (e.g. believe, love, understand, and remember etc), but we would use simple present instead.
The reason being is that those non-progressive verbs can be generally dividend into 4 groups – namely, verbs of sense, verbs expressing feeling/emotions, verbs of mental activity and verb of possession.
